Another tribute to Stuff I Liked In My Teens, this time to Diana Wynne Jones's Chrestomanci novels. They tell independent stories but they're all set in the same universe - well multiverse - with people merrily hopping from world to world to seek their fortune, escape certain death, avoid going to a particularly dreadful school or simply to do their job.
The only character who appears in every single novel is an enchanter with nine lives and a collection of memorable dressing gowns, called the Chrestomanci. Obviously, having nine lives means looking as if you went through nine growth spurts.
Also, he's British, so there's tea.
